Intragastric Balloon by ReShape™

Patients who are striving to lose weight may need further assistance with the process. Currently there is a balloon system available to patients who haven’t succeeded at diet and exercise alone or who do not want, or qualify for bariatric surgery.

What is the Intragastric Balloon?

The Intragastric Balloon is a non-surgical procedure for weight loss approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The dual balloons take up space in the stomach enabling a feeling of fullness to stimulate weight loss without altering the anatomy of the stomach.

How does it work?

On the day of the procedure two saline-filled balloons, made from medical grade silicone, are inserted into the stomach endoscopically, which consists of a tube with a camera on the end to guide the device, through the mouth and into the stomach. The use of two connected balloons allows them to conform to the natural shape of the stomach. This device offers a minimally invasive option for weight loss in an outpatient procedure, typically completed in about 30 minutes.

The balloons will remain in the stomach for six months, creating a short-term, built-in, portion control system. Patients will be able to eat the healthy foods they enjoy while the balloons help them feel full. After insertion of the balloons, patients participate in 12 months of medically-supervised nutrition and exercise coaching to help enable sustained weight loss through a continued healthy lifestyle.

After six months the balloons are deflated and removed endoscopically. Used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise, the dual balloon system provides a non-surgical option for obesity in adults.

Who is a candidate?

The Intragastric Balloon Procedure is meant for adult patients who meet the following requirements:

  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) between 30-40, with at least one co-morbidity
    • Co-morbidities may include: Type 2 diabetes, High cholesterol, Heart disease, High blood pressure, Joint pain
  • No previous weight loss surgery
  • A willingness to make healthy lifestyle changes.
