Martha’s Story

Martha Orozco
I weighed 205 lbs., had sleep apnea, hypertension, high blood pressure and cholesterol, anemia, my kidneys started failing and had developed diabetes. Every day, I was tired all the time. I looked very overweight in the mirror. When I developed chest pain, I ended up n the emergency room. I went to see my doctor. My primary care physician referred me to Dr. Fernando Bayron.

I went to see Dr. Fernando Bayron. Right away I was comforted by his manner and the fact he was bilingual in English and Spanish, I’m originally from Columbia. I had done a little research and watched a medical show on types of weight loss surgery and decided I wanted gastric sleeve surgery. When I met with Dr. Bayron, he laid out all the options, took his time to talk to me and we worked together on choosing the best weight loss surgery choice.

On the day of my surgery at Florida Medical Center, a campus of North Shore in Fort Lauderdale, I was very calm and actually happy because I knew my life was going to change. He did the surgery robotically. Dr. Bayron performs the surgery and the robot helps with precision and accuracy resulting in less recovery time, smaller incisions, minimal pain and a shorter hospital stay.

After bariatric surgery and losing weight, all of the aforementioned ailments have disappeared. Everything is normal. Just four months after gastric sleeve bariatric surgery performed by Dr. Fernando Bayron, I lost 40 lbs. and unbelievably, just 10-months after surgery I had lost 77 lbs. This success is thanks to the gastric sleeve weight loss surgery, changing my food portion sizes and watching carefully what I eat while introducing a bit more protein to my diet and a lot more vegetables.

I had to get myself accustomed to eating differently and couldn’t go on eating the way I used to eat. Dr. Bayron and his team, which included an on-staff dietician, helped me with making those changes. Eating is like an addiction to me so I had to remove myself from those situations. At first, after weight loss surgery, it was just water and soup for me. Then, I graduated to gelatin, but most importantly I felt full. My hunger was gone.

When I did start eating normal again it became important to me to choose the right kind of foods because I could only eat a little bit at a time. I used to be addicted to rice. I don’t want to eat rice any longer. My focus is now on smaller portions and more protein and vegetable consumption in my diet. The way I ate changed.

I was really happy because I felt full all of the time and my hunger had ceased to exist. The weight loss was very fast. I would weigh myself every day. My weight was dropping lower on a daily basis. I was an XL or 1X and a size 16. Just one month after surgery, my clothes became too large. Today, after weight loss surgery with Dr. Bayron, I am a size 6!

I belong to a church group and we go out to eat once a week for dinner. After my surgery, I said let’s keep going out to dinner. It was difficult at first because I couldn’t eat everything and the portion sizes when you go out to dinner are just too large. I quit going out to dinner for a while.

Now, I’m accustomed to small portions and can once again go out to dinner. I have lost all of this weight and I really just changed the way I eat when I’m out to dinner. My energy level is up.

Once you see how much weight you lost and how happy you feel, the changes you have to make are easy. When I used to go shopping, I would cry in the stores. I would look in the mirror and have to buy the large size clothes. Actually, seeing myself overweight in the mirror would make me eat more.

I was desperate and prayed to God, please let me be able to qualify for weight loss surgery. I wanted to live for my son and family. I wasn’t worried about my husband if something happened to me, he could find someone else but my son wouldn’t be able to find another mother. My husband is a good man; he loves me and my son. He made this surgery possible with his generosity.

I didn’t feel anything the day after surgery. I was almost back to normal with no pain. Resuming normal activities after my gastric sleeve surgery was easy. I went home and the following week I was back to my normal life.

I tell Dr. Bayron every time I see him, thank you and I love him because he changed my life. He was so gracious with me. Today, I love how I look especially in all my new clothes. I used to be so tired all of the time and would just stay in bed all day or night. Depression had set in. This all changed after the success of my surgery. Today, I’m full of energy! My depression is gone.

In the future, I want to work with my church more and give back to people because I have been given a new life. Recently, I went for the first time to Mexico on a vacation with my husband. This was the first time in 15-years since moving here from Colombia in which I felt good enough to fly on an airplane.

Sara’s Story

Sarah Pritchard

I am a Sunrise, Florida native, one of the rare ones. I like going out with my friends and having fun with new experiences. I love kayaking, anything outside because I am just an outdoorsy person. Silly story, sad story… I was at Universal Studios in Orlando with my boyfriend and we were going on the Jurassic Park ride and the arm bar to go over my lap didn’t fit me. I couldn’t get on the ride. It was embarrassing.

I had to get up and out of the ride’s seat. I was crying and I had to get escorted off and out of the ride area. So, I let my boyfriend ride and pushed back those tears. But, that was really the stake in the ground. I thought to myself I have to do something and I have to do something now. I want to enjoy my time being young and being alive, living life to the fullest.

Where I work there is a woman who recently had bariatric surgery. She had the procedure exactly one-year before I did and she had the gastric sleeve as well. She gave me all of her information on the procedure. In addition, I did my research online and I found the sleeve would be the best fit for me. I contacted the bariatric department where Dr. Bayron works. They were awesome! Dr. Bayron is so knowledgeable and so available to answer any questions I had. He is there for you, his office is there for you, the whole team is able to put down what they were doing and answer the phone and any questions you might have.

The gastric sleeve is what they thought would be best for me. That’s the one I did the most research on. The gastric sleeve seemed to work really well with the person I knew so I kind of wanted to go that route and it lined up perfectly for me. That’s what their team decided for me as well. Dr. Bayron went into detail of exactly what he was going to be doing and any sort of issues that could come about. He answered any questions. He had a plan for me, a nutrition plan, everything was clear and concise and that way I could lead to success.

At my job as an insurance agent, I sit all day long unless I have to get up and use the restroom. I do get up and take walks around the office when needed but my job is very sedentary. I was worried about blood clots during the beginning process of the surgery so I would get up every so often and walk laps. Having the gastric sleeve has made me more active.

The plan before surgery was to meet with Dr. Bayron to figure out the right route in terms of bariatric surgery to proceed with. There was a dietitian I met with, there was a psychological evaluation, there are several steps I had to go through and criteria I had to meet before they would even consider me for surgery. Dr. Bayron’s office was a great resource if I had any questions about the diet, about doing the psych evaluation, they were so willing to stop what they were doing and answer the phone and any questions I had. The office is conveniently located at the hospital.

I am a very nervous person, I am a worry-wort but they’re team made me so calm. I was so confident in everything and it was just a smooth process. I got up and I danced. I was excited! I was ready to have a new beginning and to have a new life. Dr. Bayron’s bedside manner is impeccable. He made me confident in his knowledge, confident at everything that was going on, his team is helpful, they’re knowledgeable as well; it’s been a fantastic process!

I was here at the hospital for 24-hours; the staff was awesome from intake all the way to discharge. Everyone was so warm and made me feel like a part of their family. I was nervous about anesthesia, so the anesthesiologist sat there and explained what was going on.

The pain was little to nothing. I was sore. It felt like I pulled an abdominal muscle and that was really all. The healing process, I have tiny little scars, but that’s it, I anticipate they will dwindle right way. But, the pain was very minimal.

Everyone is so happy with the transformation Dr. Bayron helped me to achieve. They are even very confident to pick up the phone and call Dr. Bayron’s office with any questions they might have. They feel like the bariatric family at Dr. Bayron’s office is part of my family now. I would recommend Dr. Bayron to anyone considering this surgery.  He and his team are fantastic that’s all I can say about them.

I feel awesome today! I feel like Dr. Bayron has genuinely given me a new life, I didn’t realize what I was missing, I can go into stores that I could never imagine going into before and get something off the rack and put it on and look awesome. I never realized how much I was holding myself back by being so heavy. When I first had the surgery, maybe like three weeks after I went to a store and picked up a shirt that was my size when I was pre-op not even thinking about it. I put it on and it was too big. I can’t tell you how much that impacted me. I was crying. Shopping is fun now versus this doesn’t fit, this doesn’t look right, this is too matronly, today I have options which is great!

I have tears of joy. I am still seeing my boyfriend; we’d been together seven years when this story was written. He was apprehensive about the surgery, but now that he sees the results he’s really happy with the new me! We live in an apartment that has two flights of stairs. I can get up the stairs just as fast as he can now. We’re able to do more things and we’re actually going back to Universal Studios so that way we can get back on that ride and I can go back on with him. Something that held me back from falling off the ride is no longer going to hold me back psychologically. I can now go back to wherever I would like to go, I can sit back in the movie theater seats, I can go to sporting events and not worry about if I am going to fit in the seat or not.

I never imagined I’d lose over 75 lbs. in a little more than two months. It’s the craziest thing. I still can’t comprehend it. I have a lot of issues with living in the past. Even shopping yesterday, I got shirts that were a size smaller than what I had been wearing and they’re still too big. I am going to have to get out of the mentality of living in the past and enjoy this currently, and continue living on in the future.

Jo-An’s Story

Jo-An Rivera
I weighted almost 400 lbs. years after having triplet boys and after gastric sleeve surgery performed by Dr. Fernando Bayron I went from a size 26 to a size six. It all started during a visit with my mom in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico when she started crying. My mother was crying uncontrollably. She’s a nurse at a hospital in Puerto Rico and she was feeling concerned about my weight. I sought Dr. Fernando Bayron, a general and bariatric surgeon specializing in surgical weight loss.

Dr. Bayron took care of me with a lot of professionalism, respect, kindness and knowledge since the very first time I met him at the free consultation that he offered me. But, before I tell you how I went from a size 26 to a size six, please understand losing weight was always a problem with me. I was born a big baby. I weighted nin lobs. when I was born and my mother was only 5’2″. Until recently I had no reason why I could never lose weight and would always gain so many pounds. I really didn’t eat much. Dr. Bayron explained to me the hormones in my body facilitated the weight gain.

When I was a 13 year-old I was told I was never going to be a mother. I had emergency back surgery to have my L4-L5 degenerative discs removed. I remember the doctor telling my mom that besides my lower back pain issues there were problems with my legs, especially my knees. The doctor said that besides my slim chances at having a baby, he told my mom, the nurse, that I needed to lose weight or I would end up in a wheelchair. My knees weren’t holding my body weight anymore.

At 21, I moved to the U.S. and, with my husband, decided we wanted a family. At 30, I got pregnant with triplet boys. Although I continued to do everything I could for my boys including going out shopping to get them whatever they needed, walking was difficult and, when no one was looking, I would use anything I could as a cane to assist in walking with my heavy and overweight legs.

Before I met Dr. Bayron, I signed up for all the major weight loss programs, I exercised, I went on meat only diets and I even went on salad diets supervised by my mom. During one of my stints at a weight-loss program I lost 11 lbs. and the program’s managers and directors asked me to go see a doctor and get my weight-loss listed as an ailment.

At my consultation with Dr. Bayron, He answered every one of my many questions. He took his time to answer each question. I decided to have the gastric sleeve surgery with Dr. Bayron. The surgery went very well and I was only in the hospital for one day. It was a very simple recovery. I did everything he told me and today I feel great.

I had a quick post-op and check-up with Dr. Bayron in his office. Everyone was helpful at Dr. Bayron’s office. It was clean and a convenient process for me and my family.

In a year, I lost 190 lbs. from the bariatric surgery Dr. Bayron performed. I got back to my normal routine and back to the triplets right away. Two weeks to a month later, I began to notice my weight loss. In just nine months, I went from size 26 to size six. For me, as a woman, I felt girly again when I would go clothes shipping. I was excited with more options for size six fashions rather than the size 26 clothing I was wearing just a few years ago.

A year after the surgery, I went to visit my mother, the nurse, in Puerto Rico. Once again, my mother was crying. But these were good tears.

Pam and Jason’s StoryPam and Jason Ruppert

“I can now fit in the coach seat on an airplane, having no problem fastening the seat belt,” Jason says. “I have an abundance of energy, I’m sleeping better,” Pam says. Thanks to Dr. Bayron, Pam and Jason live more active and enjoy their quality of life.

Pam and Jason Ruppert originally had gastric bypass surgery with another doctor in 2000. Dr. Fernando Bayron did revisions of those surgeries on us using a minimally invasive laparoscopic approach.

“We had revisions of our gastric bypass surgeries because our stomach pouches had stretched out over the years and Dr. Bayron had once again made them smaller. He explained to us that our weight loss would be a lot slower and told us – you have to change your lifestyle along with the surgery. Before the revision with Dr. Bayron I was 210 pounds. Now I weigh 168 pounds,” Pam Ruppert said.

“I went from 410 pounds to 306 pounds after the surgery with Dr. Bayron,” Jason Ruppert said.Dr. Bayron, Pam, and Jason Ruppert

The Ruppert’s have been married for over 20 years and live in Parkland with their sons Zach and Jordan. Dr. Bayron is a Tenet Florida Physician Services general surgeon with an office in Sunrise, FL and medical director of the Surgical Weight Loss Center at Florida Medical Center, a campus of North Shore located in Fort Lauderdale.

“We lost a lot of weight with the first surgery, but we gained it back because it’s not really about the surgery, it’s about how you eat. We didn’t realize that. My brother passed away during that time, so that didn’t help. This time around we did modifications with Dr. Bayron. They say you don’t lose nearly as much weight the second time. But, we think we’re losing more weight.

It’s all about the choices. We don’t eat bad things anymore,” Jason said.

The Ruppert’s both said the weight they’ve lost is a combination of the surgery as a tool to lose the weight as well as how they eat today. Choices they’ve made with the help of Dr. Bayron and his staff at the Sunrise office, have also helped tremendously to lose the weight and keep it off.

“I think we give each other support but they (Dr. Bayron’s office) have the support groups and dietitians at your disposal. We completely cut out rice, bread and pasta. Once in a blue moon we’ll have a taste but not much anymore. We haven’t eaten bread in forever,” Jason said.

“When we had it the first time it was very popular because people thought – boom you have the surgery and you don’t have a weight problem the rest of your life.” Surgery is just a tool; you really have to change the way you think and your lifestyle.”

Pam said it helps that Dr. Bayron is very supportive and has been there before, in their shoes.

“I think what’s inspirational is that he himself had the weight loss surgery. He used to be a lot heavier than he is now,” Pam said.

“We just committed ourselves. Both of us have back problems; I’ve had four back surgeries. I just couldn’t take it anymore; I needed to lose the weight. I think the surgery being laparoscopic makes it so much easier. After our revision surgery it was only one night in the hospital and neither of us took any pain medication. Because it’s done laparoscopically, you only have three little scars that fade over time.”

“I could have come home the same day of the surgery if they let me,” Jason said.

Pam, a retired elementary school teacher, added that today, life is different and she has an abundance of energy. She’s sleeping better.

“Our whole outlook on life changed – it isn’t about food anymore. It’s about doing different things, doing a lot of travelling we never did before. We do more as a family. There’s a whole different aura in the house. The kids, Zach and Jordan are eating healthier. I don’t keep the bad stuff in the house because I’m a junk food eater and if you eat too much – you will physically get sick. We eat to live – not live to eat,” Pam said.

Now, the Ruppert’s like to travel. Their kids are their hobbies.

“I volunteer a lot at my son’s school. I’m a room mom. I don’t care how small I am – exercise is not one of my favorite things to do. Just walking,” Pam said.

Jason said Dr. Bayron fixed his stomach pouch and the weight loss and his quality of life has changed.

“I think that we blew away the charts in weight loss – that’s what Dr. Bayron said afterwards.

We changed our lifestyle. We go out for Italian food now and we order grilled shrimp with marinara sauce. Before, I’d eat a loaf of bread, soups, appetizer and chicken parmesan.

We have probably eliminated 70 percent of our meat intake,” Jason said.

The Ruppert’s have even run into Dr. Bayron at area restaurants.

“In fact we’ve run into him a couple of times at various restaurants. I laugh because he’s eating worse than I am!”

Really the biggest thing for Jason is the quality of life he now possesses. As a business executive, Jason regularly flies to China on business trips.

“I fly First Class but every once in a while I end up in coach. That’s the biggest thing for me is going on an airplane and fitting in the regular coach seat. No problem now. Before I could never get into a coach seat and little things like putting the seat belt on was a hassle. Or going to the movie theater… We went to a Broadway Show in New York and I couldn’t fit in the seat. Now I don’t even think about it. I would plan where we went to dinner and went out based on what the seat layout was,” Jason said.

Today, Jason is enjoying spending time with his wife and family and back into his hobbies.

“I play poker and golf. I like high stakes cash games, I prefer Omaha. I play golf, but I never play enough. My favorite course is Parkland Golf & Country and Emerald Dunes is also nice. We go to the gym now which we never did before. I like to walk, ride the bike and swim,” Jason said.
